Baseball team splits week’s games, blanks Twiggs 15-0 in region opener

Region play for the Washington- Wilkes Tiger baseball team got started in right good fashion last Tuesday when Robert McGill tossed a no-hit, three-inning, mercy-ruleshortened rout of the Cobras of Twiggs County.

McGill allowed only one base runner in the 15-0 game.

The day before was a different story, however, as the Morgan County Bulldogs got their revenge for an earlier loss to the Tigers. At Morgan, Trey McAvoy got the start on the mound and got through the first two innings without giving up a run. But he ran into trouble in the third and fourth giving up five runs in each, six of which were earned runs.

David Martin came on in relief for an inning and an out and allowed another run. Then, with D.J. Barnett pitching, Morgan connected for a three-run homer to end the game at 14-2.

Trent Martin stroked a two-run single scoring both of the Tigers’ runs in the game.

Friday’s scheduled game against Aquinas was rained out and rescheduled for a later date in April.

The Tigers were on the road to Lincoln County on Tuesday of this week but results were not available in time for this issue. W-W will host GMC on Friday at 5 p.m. and will travel to Thomson to take on the Bulldogs on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
