The Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School boys track team includes (front, l-r) Demoris Jackson, Brandon Turner, Tyrece Ashmore, Eric Scott, Teverrius Jones, Desmond Jackson, (second row) Doug Standard, Tyler Stasyshyn, John Pope, Thomas Morgan, Jovan Jenkins, DaQuan Heard, Tavian Binns, (third row) Wayne Miller, Dijon Ragland, Damion Callaway, Jihad Ragge, Davion Hall, Tirrell Mahoney, (back) Tireze Ferrell, Damarcus Grant, Courtney Stripling, Courtney, and Courtney Campbell. Both the boys and girls Washington Wilkes Tiger track teams got the season started off with second place finishes in the first meet of the year competing against Madison County and Taliaferro County on March 9.

“The boys and girls did a great job even though we were a little shorthanded because some of the girls are just getting done with basketball,” Head Coach Brian Usry commented. “We look forward to having another great season and we will continue to work hard to improve,” he added.

Amber Warren works on her hurdling techniques in preparation for the next girls track meet. Unfortunately, the teams’ top two sprinters/jumpers are out of competition this year. Erika Jefferson and Eric Scott, who both place at their respective state track meets last year, are sidelined with injuries. “Without them, we are very young and inexperienced,” Usry said.

Top individual performances from the season’s opening meet included:

Tyrance Ashmore – second place, discus;

Brandon Turner – third place, discus;

Desmond Jackson – third place, long jump;

Demoris Jackson – third place, triple jump;

4x100M relay – second place; 4x400M relay – second place;

Jihad Ragge – first place, 400M;
