Two Irises grow giant sunflowers

After months of hard work and a little help from friends, Iris Corbett, 95, (left) and Iris Dyson, 84, have planted and raised a stand of giant sunflowers at Washington Manor this year. “We’ve enjoyed watching them grow every day,” said Mrs. Corbett, “but the rain played havoc with them the other day.” The plot was full of weeds in February, she said, but with the help of friends the space was prepared for planting. “I planted them myself and we get out there every day to tend to them.” The garden also is blooming with tomatoes and several kinds of flowers. “It always gives us something to do,” Mrs. Dyson said. “We’re already planning what we’ll plant next year.”
