Robert Dean Butler

Funeral services for Robert Dean Butler, 74, of Tryon, N.C., were held Friday, July 2, 2010, at the Tryon United Methodist Church with Rev. Neil Haynes and Rev. Phillip Hurst officiating. He died Tuesday, June 29, in the Smith Phayer Hospice House, Landrum, S.C. Interment was in the cemetery of Pope’s Chapel Church, Tignall, Saturday, July 3.

Mr. Butler was born in Tignall and was the son of the late Robert and Jewell Rucker Butler. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy, Class of 1957. He was the owner and operator of Owen’s Pharmacy for 40 years and owned Dean Butler Realty for a number of years. He was a former member and president of the Tryon Rotary Club and a member of the Tryon Country Club. He was a member of the Tryon United Methodist Church, and a member of the National Association of Left- Handed Golfers.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gwenlyn Huss Butler; four sons, Barry Butler anda his wife Mary of Tryon, N.C., Brent Butler and his wife Terry of Landrum, S.C., Bruce Butler of Cary, N.C., and Byron Butler and his wife Ashley of Landrum, S.C.; a daughter, Melanie Cobb and her husband Steve of Tryon; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, was in charge of arrangements. Hopkins Funeral Home of Washington was in charge of local arrangements.
