Victory Baptist sets homecoming service for Sunday, Aug. 8

Victory Baptist Church on the Newtown Road in Wilkes County will have homecoming on Sunday, August 8. The service will mark the 45th anniversary of the church which began in 1965 with Lawrence Griffith as the founding pastor.

Pastor Griffith will be the speaker for the morning service on homecoming day. He was pastor at Victory for seven years. He later became pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church, later named Tabernacle, in Abingdon, Virginia. During his seven years in Abingdon, he assisted a fellow pastor in the organization of another church in the area.

After moving back to Georgia in 1979, Griffith pastored two other churches: Tabernacle in Nicholson and Calvary in Athens. Due to health issues he is no longer physically able to pastor, but as his health allows, he ministers in area nursing homes and plays the guitar in his home church in Athens, Tenn.

The evening service will begin at 5:30 p.m. with Calvary Quartet singing and Evangelist Billy Ingram preaching.
