Non-partisan candidates qualify for Nov. election
Two candidates each have qualified to run for two open Wilkes school board seats.
The election for the seats will be on the non-partisan ballot in November’s General Election.
The District 1 Board of Education seat, held by Kay Finnell, and the District 2 seat, held by Bob Guin, are up for election this year, and neither incumbent is running for re-election, Probate Clerk Connie Zello said. Two candidates, Dorothy Jordan and Cassandra Campbell, are running for the District 1 seat, and two men, Dann Standard and Olin Newby, have qualified for the District 2 seat.
In addition, Supervisor of Elections Probate Judge Thomas Charping said that Joseph Riley has qualified to run for Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor.
The qualifying session in April was for partisan elected offices, which will see their primary election July 20. The general election, which will also include non-partisan offices such as the school board, is November 2.
The qualifying period for the non-partisan election began Monday, June 28, and ran through noon Friday, July 2.
Candidates for the fall election are reminded that an announcement article of their intention to seek office will be run free of charge in The News-Reporter one time. However, information for such an article must be received by the newspaper not later than Thursday, July 22. Candidates are responsible for providing the information and will not be contacted by this newspaper.
