The Dixie Swim Club to debut August 12 at Playhouse
Starring in The Dixie Swim Club are (l-r) Libby Foster, Paula Stevens, Tina Lewis, Virginia Lee King, and Rose Weser.
The Washington Little Theater Company will present its summer production of The Dixie Swim Club
on August 12-14 at 8 p.m. and August 15 at 3 p.m. This hilarious comedy is being brought back by popular demand after a successful run of four shows in August 2009.
The show takes place in a small beach cottage in Outer Banks, North Carolina, and revolves around five Southern women whose friendships began many years ago when they were on a college swim team. Now, they set aside one weekend every August to recharge their relationships.
Free from all other stress—husbands, jobs, and kids—these women meet to catch up, eat, laugh, and meddle in each other’s lives. The Dixie Swim Club focuses on four of those weekends and spans a time period of 33 years.
Sheree, the spunky team captain (played by Rose Weser of Lincolnton), struggles to maintain her “perfect,” organized life and continues to lead the group through the years.
Dinah, the wisecracking businesswoman (played by Tina Lewis of Washington) has a successful position in an Atlanta law firm, but her courtroom victories strike a stark contrast with her almost nonexistent love life.
When she isn’t going through a divorce or meeting a new man, Lexie (played by Ginny King of Washington) spends most of her time in the plastic surgeon’s office, fighting to hold on to her looks and youth for as long as possible.
Vernadette (played by Libby Foster of Washington) has a life that resembles a country song, complete with a beer-guzzling husband and a son recently voted Inmate of the Month. Wisely, she decides to just give in and embrace the chaos that surrounds her.
And sweet Jeri Neal (played by Paula Stevens, also of Washington), who always helps keep the peace when conflict arises, experiences an unexpected late entry to motherhood that takes the entire team by surprise.
As these five lives unfold and years pass, these women increasingly rely on each other to get through the challenges (men, marriage, parenting, divorce, and aging) that life flings at them. The Dixie Swim Club is a touching, humorous comedy about friendships that last forever—the perfect show to see with a group of your best friends, your sisters, and even your Red Hat Society.
