Sunday was National Ice Cream Day so I just had to celebrate by making some homemade ice cream. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month and established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in the month. It has been called Sundae Sunday. When I was
child there were only three flavors, vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. When we made homemade ice cream, my job was to sit on the ice cream freezer while someone turned the handle. Thank goodness we don’t have to go to that much trouble to enjoy ice cream now. Now you don’t even have to have ice cream salt and ice. Of course, there are too many flavors to choose from at the store, but there’s nothing like the homemade kind. I remember the first thing my sister did when she got an ice cream cone was to bite the bottom out of the cone and of course the ice cream was chocolate. It is so interesting to see
baby’s face when he or she takes that first bite of ice cream. I’m sure those dog lovers are getting their dogs a treat in the ice cream section at the grocery store. Happy Ice Cream Day and Month. ƒFamily reunions have always been lots of fun to me. Earlier family reunions were held outside with long tables holding the food and everyone swinging hand held fans. We suffered the heat, flies, and yellow jackets. My family just attended the Rhodes family reunion at Beulah Baptist Church last Saturday, July 17, and were so glad it was inside the family life center there. There were long tables of delicious food but no one had to swat flies. Jack Rhodes was the oldest living male descendant of John Morgan Rhodes and Lois Wright Rhodes whereas Nita Rhodes Riley was the oldest living descendant. I was fortunate to be a cousin of the Albert and Lunelle Beard Rhodes family. We always have had so much fun with our Rhodes cousins. Some people at the reunion that I know who were from out of town were Ricci Lynn Rhodes of Florida; Chris and Frances Johnson of North Augusta; Carolyn Rhodes of McDonough; Gena, Caleb, and Sydney Tyler of Hoschton; R.C. and Barbara Oakley of Hampton; Carol and Barbara Blackmon of Hull; Bobby and Maureen Rhodes of Augusta; Michael and Phillip Rhodes of Augusta; April Rhodes of Augusta; Karen, Taylor, and Christopher Rhodes of Danielsville; Mary Icon and Dawson of Florida; and Cecil and Teeny Hussiey and their granddaughters, Alexander anad Brianna, all of North Carolina. I think it is important for our children and grandchildren to know their relatives. ƒThere was the Moss and Jones family reunion the weekend before so Cecil and Flossie Rhodes have probably reunioned out. They had a fish fry on the Saturday night before the reunion. More about this reunion will be in the paper next week when Flossie will update me on that one. ƒSpeaking of reunions, a group of ladies who all started to school in the first grade at Tignall Elementary School and went through the 12th grade in Washington High School together met at The Talk of the Town for lunch last Thursday. They were Carolyn Heard Snider from Martinez; Marjorie Sale Gibson from Dallas; Mary Thomas Bunch Scarborough from Elberton; Nancy Arrington Hilley, Jeanette Freeman Broome, Phyllis Rhodes Drake and Carolyn Dunaway Gammon. Vivian Ware Walker was in this group and had planned to join them for lunch but was unable to be there. Marjorie Gibson, Nancy Hilley, and Mary Thomas Scarborough met at the home of Carolyn Gammon and visited for a while before meeting the others in Washington at the restaurant. It is amazing that these ladies have remained close friends all these years. ƒCaleb Tyler of Hoschton has been visiting this week with his grandparents, Alex and Kay Tyler. ƒ Mike and Miriam Bobo of Mc- Donough were weekend guests of Graydon and Pat Bobo. ƒErnest and Faye Lamar took their grandchildren, Erin Thornton and Alex Lamar, to Callaway Gardens where they spent the weekend. They remembered taking Tracy and Bruce when they were the ages of these grandchildren. ƒDavid and Nancy Hilley spent Sunday night, July 11, with Stacy and Amanda Hilley, Owen and Warren in Commerce. Owen came home with them and spent Monday and Tuesday nights. ƒKathy and Stacey Ware attended a birthday party Saturday in Greensboro for Kathy's nephew, Mikey Etheridge. ƒ Layton and Gloria Harris spent Thursday through Monday at their hut in Ellijay. They went through Cleveland and visited their grandsons, Jacob and Dylan Harris, on Thursday. On Friday they went to Athens, Tenn., and visited Layton's aunt, Myrline Harrison. ƒCeleste Adams was joined by Marsha Lance for their trip to Gainesville for their ladies high school reunion at the Collegiate Grill on Wednesday morning. After their get-together Marsha and Celeste had lunch at the Long Street Cafe in Gainesville. After lunch Marsha took Celeste to Rabbit Town which is a very small town with a huge stone rabbit in the middle of the town. I've never heard of Rabbit Town, but I'll bet residents of Rabbit Town have never heard of Tignall. ƒI just walked by Daisy Parker's home and saw lots of huge toadstools in her front yard. They are big enough for me to sit on. ƒThe Tignall Homemakers Club enjoyed lunch in Elberton Thursday at the McIntosh Coffee Shoppe. ƒVisiting with Tony and Marion Hammond Sunday afternoon were their niece, Brandi Hammond of Clark Hill, S.C., and her friend, Adam Beasley of North Augusta. They enjoyed picking blueberries and swimming. ƒHeather Hammond has passed her State Board. Congratulations, Heather. ƒMallorysville Baptist Church will be having a Grill & Chill Sunday, August 1. Some members may grill and some may make ice cream, but everyone gets to eat. That sounds like fun. ƒO'Neal and Celeste Adams joined the Adams family Sunday for a birthday party for Roslyn Adams and Arnold Adams. This was more like a family reunion with Roslyn's family, Arnold's family, and all their relatives there for a wonderful barbecue dinner. ƒSpending Sunday with Louie and Vivian Wolozin were Dale and Kathy Robertson of Winder. ƒLittle Jade Fincher, daughter of Josh and Lacey Fincher, had her tonsils removed last week. She is doing great. I remember my grandson, Curt Gammon, had his tonsils removed when he was in preschool. He went to school and told that he was having his tongue removed. ƒLet's keep the following people in our prayers: Becky Thomasson, Christine Burton, Irene Echols, Phoebe Davis, Vivian Wolozin, Marilyn and Jack Newsome, Charles Pullen, Charles Blakey, Randy Butts, Tina VanHart, Shirley Roberson, Marvin Weaver, Tommy Garrett, Lois Sale, Judy Wright, Judy Thornton, Scott Williamson, Kathryn Anderson, Becky Stover, and Tim Echols. ƒWill Rogers once said, "So live that you wouldn't be ashamed to sell the family parrot to the town gossip."
