“No watermelon, no foul.”

– Edward, Twilight

Okay, so Edward didn’t really say that, but you know he thought it. It’s time again to celebrate that fabulous summer fruit – watermelons. Saturday, August 7, is the date for the seventh annual Tom Watson Watermelon Festival in historic Thomson, Georgia. There will be games, contests, a watermelon slingshot, music, food, and watermelons.

New this year will be the “Pig O’Cache” contest. Every weekend in July a “Pig O’Cache” will be hidden in McDuffie County. The caches are painted pigs. They don’t talk like Hamm in Toy Story, but they do hold a surprise. GPS coordinates will be posted Fridays on the Hickory Hill Facebook page and on the Explore McDuffie Facebook page. Also, listen to WTHO for the coordinates.

There is a first finder prize in each Pig O’Cache. When the new cache is placed the old cache will be removed. On August 7, a final Pig O’Cache will be placed, but coordinates must be picked up at the Watson-Brown table at the Watermelon Festival, they will not be available online.

Also on tap for the festival: Watermelon Seed Spitting Con- test.

 Watermelon Shot-put.

Prizes awarded to winners of the various contests.

Kids Zone – this watermelonenriched area is just for kids ages eight and younger where they can play watermelon toss across, do some watermelon bowling, and blow some giant bubbles.

Arts and crafts vendors, food, historical and educational displays.

 Live music.

The Watermelon Festival is free. It takes place from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 7 at Hickory Hill, 502 Hickory Hill Drive, in Thomson. For more information call 706-595-8886 or 706-595-7777. For a map and directions go to www. hickory-hill.org.
