Tignall News
We had a strange experience early Tuesday morning of last week. At 6 a.m. my husband turned on the news as usual. He awakened me to tell me something strange was going on. I saw that Fox News was in Pakistan or some place like that with their language, CNN was in China with Chinese language, another news station was in France speaking French, a cartoon channel was speaking in a foreign language and channels 6 and 12 were blacked out. I had the feeling that America had disappeared overnight. After about 30 minutes everything was back to normal. I wonder if anyone else saw that. Faye Lamar said she saw the same thing so we didn’t imagine this. ƒSpeaking of strange, I did see on the news where a man in Massachusetts had what was thought to be a tumor in his lungs and was having surgery for what he thought was a malignant tumor. The doctors found a pea sprout in one of his lungs. He had evidently had a pea to go down the wrong way several months before. How many times have we told our children, "Don't swallow those watermelon seeds or a watermelon will grow inside you?" ƒI received an interesting e-mail from Madeline Heard Poteet in Texas. She sent me a picture of a beautiful quilt that was pieced together by someone in her husband's family in the late 1920s or 1930s many years ago. Madeline got her neighbor to help her with the quilting. Her neighbor grew up in Midland, Texas, and when she was young, she was a babysitter for George and Barbara Bush. Madeline said she enjoyed hearing about her experiences with them while she quilted. When preparing the top for quilting they were able to figure out who pieced this together when they saw some small light brown spots in a couple of places on the quilt top. It dawned on Madeline that the spots were snuff! Eddie, Madeline's husband, had once told her that his great-grandmother was a big user of snuff and bought Levi Garrett (brand) by the case. She realized that this quilt was put together by Ed- die's great-grandmother. When I was a child there were snuff samples sent in the mail. My sister, Kay Tyler, was dared by me to try the peach snuff sample. It sounded so good. Well, I thought she never would quit spitting. ƒ Scott and Kathy Ware and Stacey enjoyed supper with Kathy's parents, Paul and Gail Vandiver in Union Point, last Saturday night. ƒI understand Bill Savage fixed Brooke Dawson's car with a pair of kitchen shears last week.
