Fall ArtFest issues call for artists to display, sell works Nov. 5-7
A call for artists has been issued by the Washington-Wilkes Arts Foundation to display their works at the Fall ArtFest set for November 5, 6, and 7 on The Square in Washington.
Artist applications are due by October 1, organizers say.
Details of the call for artists are available at the foundation’s web site, www.washingtonwilkesarts. org. The festival’s list of invited and returning artists will represent original art in media ranging from painting to photography, ceramics to sculpture, and fine art to folk art, said foundation president Debbie Wells.
For the first time, the Fall ArtFest will have a Southern artist who works in living trees and shrubs as the show’s guest artist.
“Pearl Fryar, a legendary topiary artist from South Carolina, is our honored guest artist for 2010,” said Wells. “Don’t miss the chance to interact with one of the most amazing artists in the South.”
Fryar’s 3-acre topiary garden at his home in Bishopville, S.C., grew out of a desire to earn the city’s “Yard of the Month” award in 1983, and now the garden hosts visitors from all over the world to see the hundreds of trees and bushes scavenged from local nurseries which Fryar has sculpted into a vast number of artistic shapes.
Featured in the film “A Man Named Pearl,” Fryar will also visit Wilkes County schools to inspire students, Wells said.
“It’s going to be a wonderful weekend,” she said. “We hope it will be the best Fall ArtFest yet.”
