Reception planned for Tiger champs prior to naming football field
A reception has been planned prior to the official naming of the athletic field at Tiger Stadium in honor of Coach Charlie Davidson on Friday, September 24.
Tiger great John Harvey Edwards and his wife Laverne are holding a reception for all football players and cheerleaders from the 1960, 1963, 1966, and 1967 championship teams at their home at 1045 Greensboro Road from 3:30-5:30 p.m. prior to the game.
Those planning to attend the reception are asked to RSVP by September 17 to davidsonteams@ gmail.com.
The naming of the Charlie Davidson Field ceremony will be at 7 p.m. prior to the game between the W-W Tigers and Oconee County. Also during the evening’s festivities, members of the 1960 team will be recognized, as will members of the undefeated, unscored-on team of 1940. Those team members are urged to plan on attending. Coach Davidson will also be on hand for the event.
The recognition of Coach Davidson coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Tiger state championship in 1960, the first of four titles under Davidson.
“Since 1919, no coach has matched his record,” sports historian Skeet Willingham said. “He guided Washington-Wilkes to its only four state championships, and he beat Lincoln County eight times. Our recognition of his accomplishments is long overdue.”
