Walker descendants gather for reunion August 15
Thelma Walker Webb
Descendants of Daniel Lumpkin Walker and Margaret Elizabeth Stephenson Walker met at Fishing Creek Baptist Church for their 90th consecutive reunion on Sunday, August 15.
They were joined by descendants of Lumpkin’s brother, Dr. Samuel Headen Walker and Hattie Farrow Walker and other connected families.
After a period of greeting and registration, the group was welcomed by Roger Walker of Washington.
Rev. David Brown of Franklin, N.C., blessed the food and a bountiful covered dish dinner was served to about 90 persons who enjoyed an afternoon of reconnecting and reminiscing about days gone by.
Following lunch, the group moved from the fellowship hall into the sanctuary where Linda W. Anthony of Washington made announcements and spoke briefly of the importance of family reunions.
Thelma Walker Webb of Clarkesville, 84, was recognized as the oldest family member present. She grew up in Wilkes County and is the daughter of the late Cora Wheeles Walker and Ernest Walker. Riley Rogers of Tignall, eight and a half month-old son of Amber Jordan, was acknowledged as the youngest descendant present.
Sylvia Lee Walker
Mrs. Anthony then introduced Sylvia Lee Walker of Rayle who entertained with her special brand of country and gospel songs. Sylvia, 11-year-old daughter of Eddie and Selena Walker, has made a name for herself in the area singing at churches, political rallies, country fairs, fund-raisers and talent shows. She was recently a guest on Mornings with Lorri and Larry on Family Net. She is currently competing in the first annual Athens’ Got Talent event.
After the entertainment, group pictures were taken for insertion in the family newsletter. Descendants from three of the six children of Lumpkin and Margaret were represented. A large number attended from the Will Walker family including those from his first wife, Georgia Brown, and his second wife, Florence Ford.
