Departing Wilkes County Board of Education members Kay Finnell (left) and Bob Guin (right) said farewell to Wilkes School Superintendent Dr. Rosemary Caddell at their last meeting. The Wilkes County Board of Education said goodbye to two of its members last Monday night during the board’s regular December meeting.

Departing board members Kay Finnell and Bob Guin thanked Superintendent Dr. Rosemary Caddell and fellow board members for their assistance during their years of service on the board. Newly elected board members Dot Jordan and Dann Standard will take their seats at the board’s January meeting.

Dr. Caddell opened the meeting saying that there was nothing but good news from Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School. Augusta television station WJBFTV6 has selected senior Milton James as a scholar-athlete, and has honored teachers Renee Crisp and Robert Wheeler with the station’s Golden Apple award.

After a summary of the system’s financial condition in relation to the temporary tax digest, Chairman Ricky Callaway said that he regretted having to sue to have the temporary digest published and billed. “This is not personal,” he said. “It’s strictly business. There were no options for us – if we didn’t desperately need the money we wouldn’t have done this. I just wanted to go on record saying that this was all business, and that I feel sorry for Mrs. Hubbard in the plight she’s in.”

In other action, the board reviewed the anticipated Federal income for the year to come, and reviewed the SPLOST schedule to be published in the newspaper.

The board also approved the contract for John Harvey Edwards as project manager for construction of new athletic fields at the new school complex. The construction has already started and completion is expected by August 31, 2011.

After discussion, the board also approved a change to the elementary school’s promotion policy, and a change to the elementary school handbook.

The board’s January meeting is set for January 24 at 7 p.m.
