Tiger wrestlers compete in recent matches; Martin wins class again at Viking Invitational

The WWCHS team had a successful week in both dual and tournament competition just before Christmas. On Tuesday, the Tigers defeated AAA power Madison County 41-27. On Thursday, the W-W Middle School Tigers won matches against both Oglethorpe County and Greenbrier. J.T. Smith and Paden McTier led W-WMS with three wins each, followed by Austin Hackney and Clay Lawson with two wins each.

Friday and Saturday, W-W travelled to Soperton for the 18-team Viking Invitational. The Tigers came home with a strong fifth place finish, besting six other Class A programs in the field. Class AAAAA Ware County was the tournament winner.

David Martin was a tournament champion for the second year in a row, finishing first in the 189-lb. weight class. Other placers for the Tigers were Jack Martin (103) and Damarcus Grant (130) who both finished fourth, and thirdplace finishers Dennis Hagan (140) and Will Lawson (171). Matthew Howard (215) went 4-1, and Josh McLeroy (125) finished 3-2. Justin Cronic (160), Ben Hodges (119), Demetriuos McDougle (135), Rob Lovvorn (145), Jesus Maldanado (152), and Patrick Thompson (285) all had at least one win.

Following a much-needed break, the Tigers will resume competiton on January 4 with a tri-meet against Banks County and East Hall in Homer. The following weekend the Tigers will travel to Wesleyan in Gwinnett County for the Area 2A team dual tournament.
