Willis Callaway Lindsey Jr.

Willis Callaway Lindsey Jr., 84, of Washington, died Sunday, January 22, 2012, at his home. He generously donated his body to the Georgia Health Sciences University at the Medical College of Georgia for research and education.

Mr. Lindsey was a native of Washington and was the son of the late Willis Callaway Lindsey and Lucile Barbre Lindsey Granade. He graduated from Washington High School in 1944 and then attended Duke University. He served in the United States Navy as a hospital Corpsman at Bethesda, Maryland, until the end of World War II. He graduated from Duke University in 1949 and was owner of Lindsey Chevrolet Company Inc., Washington, until 1985. He was married to Phyllis White on September 15, 1951.

Mr. Lindsey served on the Washington City Council and then was the chairman of the Wilkes County Board of Education from 1970 until 1978 during the tumultuous years of integration. He also worked with the Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation placing plaques on buildings and homes. The citations are compiled at the Mary Willis Library. He was a golfer and an avid tennis player.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis White Lindsey, Washington; three children, Dr. Patricia Ann Lindsey Harris, and her husband, Dr. David J. Harris Jr., of Knoxville, Tennessee, Dr. Peggy S. Lindsey, and her husband, Dr. Peter W. Wilson, of Atlanta, and Dr. John Thomas Lindsey, and his wife, Jeannine Stipelcovich Lindsey, of New Orleans, Louisiana; seven grandchildren; and three nieces.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date.

I played in his front yard

I played in his front yard (back yard too) with John as a young kid. Alwasys apprecited the intrest he took in us and our football, basketball, tennis golf, go cart activites or what ever we were into at the time.....he will be missed I am sure!
