Tax hike devastating
On January 12, our County Commissioners raised our property tax rate by almost 10%. This tax increase was done during the largest recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s. This very large tax rate increase is especially punitive to our elderly and retired citizens and to our low income families. During these very tough economic times where one can get only ΒΌ% interest on their savings account, a 10% increase in our tax rate will have a devastating effect on many.
While a great number of us have had to cut back significantly on our spending, as have many companies, our county says they are not going to cut back on spending but demand even more of your money. If you do not pay your property taxes, they will take your property. How can they not see during these difficult economic times what an enormous burden high property taxes are for so many of our people. One must ask, who do our County Commissioners really represent?
