Photos by SPARKY NEWSOME Photos by SPARKY NEWSOME The Washington-Wilkes Middle School Tigers opened their 2012 season with the Elbert County Blue Devils at Tiger Stadium last Thursday, August 30, and played hard but came up short 14-30 against their eighth-grade-heavy opponent.

“We have a lot of kids that are playing football at this level for the first time,” said Head Coach Nick Brinson, who remained optimistic, saying, “We will continue to get better as the year progresses.”

After taking the handoff from quarterback Major Robinson, Hunter Brock (above, left) races right to avoid Blue Devil tacklers. Mardrez Jackson (top, right) returns a punt, and Gabriel Mills (at right) beats pursuers through the line for a good gain. Below, Brock hangs on tightly to slow the Elbert ball carrier who was eventually down behind the line.

The middle school Tigers play Wrens on Wednesday at home this week beginning at 5 p.m. Next Wednesday, September 12, they will travel to Warren County for a five o’clock start.
