Kaidyn Porter, daughter of Brooke and Demetrice Porter of Washington, was honored with a party at Chuck E. Cheese in Athens on Saturday, June 29. Many of her friends and family members were present to celebrate her birthday, including her grandmothers, Kay Berry and Rosemary Gresham, and her great-greatgrandmother, Ruby Arnold. Kaidyn and her guests enjoyed pizza and a Barbie birthday cake. Maebrynn was excited to celebrate with “Kaidyn Bug.”
. Pastor Jim Newsome delivered the sermon, “Do Not Be Deceived” at Sardis Baptist Church on Sunday, June 30. He cited a poignant passage, Galatians 6:7-9. Chris Townsend shared a special Independence Day message with the children, and Denise Armour held Children’s church in the annex. The Lord’s Supper was observed, as well. Following the service, the congregation gathered for the fifth Sunday fellowship meal. Tina and Nina Boatwright arranged everything, and the food was delicious. I must especially brag on Martha Hall’s pound cake. If you have not tasted it, I am truly sorry. Thanks to everyone who contributes to these special meals.

. J.W. and Bonnie Boatwright are the proud great-grandparents of James Wilkes Holdsworth, son of Jimmy and Rachel Gamble Holdsworth of Lawrenceville. Wilkes was born on Tuesday, July 2, in Gainesville. His grandmother, Connie Boatwright Gamble of Martinez, is been staying with the family.
. Johnnie Boatwright is recovering nicely after undergoing surgery on Tuesday, July 2, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
. Happy belated birthday to my mommy, Liz Henry Spooner! She celebrated her special day on Wednesday, July 3.
. Maebrynn and I enjoyed a mother-daughter outing on Wednesday, July 3 (before the rain set in). After Mae’s check-up with Dr. Getts at Covenant Pediatrics in Martinez, we ate lunch at Rhineharts Oyster Bar.
. Carl and Vickie Sisson arrived in Georgia on Wednesday, July 3. Carl spent the holiday weekend in Rayle with his mother, Mildred Sisson, while Vickie visited with her parents in Monroe.
. Kelly, Maebrynn, and I attended the 57th annual Reeves Independence Day celebration on the Ogeechee River in Millen on July 4. This is always a day of fellowship and good food, and this year it was also a celebration of my grandfather, Robert Reeves, Sr. He began this tradition with his extended family, and we plan to carry on as long as possible! Madeline Reeves and Greg Callaway were present, as well as Mary Kate and Trent Dauler of Woodville. McKenzie Spooner also joined us this year.
. Mildred Sisson enjoyed having Tommy and Gloria Wheatley, and Richard, Lisa, and Amy McAvoy join her and Carl Sisson for lunch on Friday, July 5.
. Kelly grilled pork chops for Liz Spooner on Friday, July 5, in late celebration of her birthday. Andrew, McKenzie, and Wes Spooner joined us as well.
. Carl and Mildred Sisson joined Vickie Sisson for a family gathering hosted by Vickie’s parents, Bobby and Elsie Bunn, her aunt, Carol Meeks, and cousin, Donald Meeks, at the Meeks’ home in Monroe. Bobby Bunn was the chief chef at the fish fry. Carl and Vickie returned to their home in Alabama on Sunday, July 7.
. Kelly and I joined Josh and Lindley Callaway for dinner at Wings-N-Things in Washington on Saturday, July 6. We enjoyed the musical talent of Will Parker and Nathan Pearson while we dined.
. Maebrynn joined her GiGi (Liz Spooner) for the fireworks show at Elijah Clarke State Park on Saturday, July 6. They met Joey, Heather, and Ryan Smith, along with many others from the “Effingham County Crew” for an evening of fun at the lake.
. Chris Townsend shared a special message at Sardis Baptist Church on Sunday, July 7, in the absence of Pastor Jim Newsome. He also shared a message with the children. Kay Berry held Children’s church in the annex, assisted by Kaitlyn Porter. Bree Nicole Long, daughter of Cody Armour and Cody Long, was welcomed for her visit to Sardis Baptist with her mother.
