She was born December 2, 1919, in Wilkes County, Georgia, to the late Ralph E. Sayer and Nellie Garrett Sayer and grew up in Wilkes County. She attended Berry College, where she met her husband, Talmage B. Young. Kathryn and Talmage enjoyed 59 very happy years together until his death in 1999.

Kathryn always saw the best in everyone she knew. She lovingly supported her family and encouraged education. Kathryn was a creative seamstress and flower arranger. A perfectionist in everything, she set high goals for her family and helped them achieve those goals. Beyond the love of family and friends, Kathryn enjoyed gardening, arranging flowers, and judging flower shows. She was a member of Peddle Pushers and The Raleigh Garden Club, The Camilla Society, and Ikebana International. She arranged flowers for her churches, Forest Hills Baptist and Raleigh Church of Christ. She decorated the Governor’s Mansion and North Carolina State Capitol, and judged many flower shows at the North Carolina State Fair. Kathryn generously gave flowers and plants to family, friends, and even strangers. Her gardens were always lush with flowers.

Kathryn was predeceased by her husband, Talmage B. Young, brother Ralph Sayer, and her infant sister Rosalind.

Kathryn is survived by brother, Emory Sayer (Henry), daughters Gloria Y. Perkinson (Jarvis) and Alice Y. Scales (Glenn). Kathryn is survived by her five grandchildren, Deborah Johnson, Karen Bowman (Wally), Donna Matthews (Glenn), Emily Scales, and David Scales. She is also survived four great-grandchildren, Heather Boykin (Evan), Kevin Ricks (Tracey), Christian Mayes, and Luke Johnson; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the loving and skilled caregivers at her home and at Elsie’s Place that provided such wonderful care and support in Kathryn’s declining years.

Mitchell Funeral Home of Raleigh, North Carolina, was in charge of arrangements.
