Washington man arrested in raid on back yard pot

Wilkes County Sheriff’s deputies teamed up with a regional drug task force and Washington police Friday to arrest a Washington man for growing marijuana in his back yard, Sheriff Mark Moore announced Tuesday.

“As a result of an ongoing drug investigation, on Friday, June 6, deputies from the Sheriff’s office, officers from the Northern Piedmont MANS unit and Washington police carried out a search warrant at 410 Barnett Street in Washington,” he said. “During the search, officers seized 12 marijuana plants, ranging from one foot to four feet tall, growing in the back yard.”

As a result of the seizure, authorities arrested Avery Mathis, 47, took him into custody, and transported him to the Wilkes County Law Enforcement Center where he is charged with one count of felony manufacture of marijuana, Moore said.

After a first appearance before a judge on Friday, Mathis was released Monday on $50,000 bond.
