Washington-Wilkes families line up to sign up for official Toys for Tots

Crowds of parents lined up Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon to sign up their children to receive a Christmas toy from the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program this year.

The signups will continue weekdays through Tuesday, November 25, from 1 to 5 p.m. at The Pope Center on Lexington Avenue. The toy distribution will be held Monday, December 22, at the same location.

This year, the association with Toys for Tots will allow for needy children all over Wilkes County to get something for Christmas, rather than just those in Washington.

Application forms are available at the Washington City Hall, Tignall

City Hall, the W-W Chamber of Commerce, Wilkes EMS, and the Washington Fire Department. Application should be taken to The Pope Center during the sign-up days.

The program is only for qualified families. Applicants will need to have several items to apply, including a copy of all income, a copy of all bills, receipts from DHS for food stamp assistance, Social Security cards for all family members, and birth certificates for all children.

The Washington-Wilkes participation with the official Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program came about only recently with the dissolution of the Washington Police Department and the department’s Gifts for Children program.
