Employee embezzlement cases now undergoing investigations

A Washington woman was arrested in connection with a theft from a store in Tignall after she admitted to taking bank deposits; and a second case of alleged employee theft from a Wilkes County business is under investigation.

On Thursday, August 11, Wilkes County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the Dollar General store on South Hulin Street in Tignall in reference to a reported theft of money. In the incident report, Deputy M.T. Land said that Patricia Dobbs, 45, had met him at the store and admitted that she had “kept some deposits and took the money.”

Deputies met with Dollar General District Manager Paul Caruso who stated, according to the report, that he had proof of at least three months of deposits missing totaling $8,428.53 and that Dobbs told Caruso that she had taken them.

After being interviewed by Investigators Philliph Perkins and Jason Gaddy at the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, Dobbs was arrested on charges of felony theft by taking, and of felony forgery in the first degree. She was released on $13,200 bond.

In another alleged case of embezzlement, investigators with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office are looking into a case of long-term theft from a Wilkes County business that was reported August 4.

Money had apparently been stolen from Palmer Equipment Company, one of Wilkes County’s largest agri-businesses, and a former employee, Debra Wall, has been questioned in the case.

“Right now, we’re waiting for more documentation from the company,” GBI Special Agent Patrick Morgan said. “The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office requested our help, and we’re just in the very beginning of the investigation. We haven’t arrested anybody yet.”

In the early part of the investigation, the sheriff’s office report said, some $100,000 was found to be missing from December 2015 to the present, and much higher losses are possible. No comment was available from the owner, Wade Palmer, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
