Firefighters contain blaze at rear of home

The Washington Fire Department responded to a call for a house fire at the home of Debra Bates, located at 207 Mercer Street, on Wednesday, March 8. The department was on scene within three minutes from the time the call went out. According to Chief C.J. Gilland, the fire started at the back of the house, however firefighters were able to contain the fire where they located it, and nobody was at home at the time of the disturbance. As a reminder, Gilland said “This is the time of year when people need to change out their smoke detectors. We’ve had four house fires since March 2, and only one of those homes had smoke detectors in it.”
