Boys and girls middle school Tiger track teams competing well against area’s young athletes

The Washington Wilkes Middle School boys and girls track teams got underway early this month in Thomson and “the young Tiger runners did very well,” according to Coach Tommy Saggus. The Tigers had several kids to finish in the top three of their events and Saggus mentioned that Corey Danner, Jamarquez Tyson, Justin Myers, Jalyen Pitts, Jeremiah Fry, Quizabin Jackson, and Dale Fisher “did very well” for the boys.

On the girls side, finishing in the top three of their events were Vernisha Lester, Janae Walton, Jada Porter, Whitney Dawson, Tamara McAvoy, Lyneshia Watts, Jordyn Welburn, Daviauna Mahoney, Maggie Marxen, Madison McGaughey, and Mary Kathryn Mack.

The Tigers competed against Thomson, Washington County, Warrenton, Louisville, and Taliaferro County.

On March 8, the young Tiger track team traveled to Washington County and competed against the same teams as before. The Tigers did very well but were only able to compete in a few field events because of time restraints.

The kids that got to compete did well though, Saggus reported. Boys standing out were Malik Wheeler, Byron Hampton, Jaylen Pitts, and Jamarques Tyson. Girls standing out were Madison McGaughey, Vernisha Lester, Whitney Dawson, Janae Walton, and Lyneshia Watts.

Next up for the Middle School Tiger Track team is on Wednesday, March 15, when the teams will again travel to Thomson. Then on Saturday, March 25, the Tigers have their middle school track championship meet.
