Photos by MERCER HARRIS The Washington-Wilkes Tiger girls tennis team beat Towns County super quick and then battled for an eternity against the Red Devils of Lincoln County before winning the Class A Area 4 championship last week.

Against Towns, first single Lykah Mora beat Emma Kate Ledford in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Second single Destiny Favors also smashed her opponent, Hannah Green 6-0, 6-1; and then first doubles Laney Thornton and Alyssa Holley defeated Kiersten Ledford and Amanda Donnelly 6-1, 6-2 to end the match. At the time, third single Erin McAvoy and second doubles Zakia Booker and Lindsey Moore were also handily winning their respective sets.

It was a different story as the girls took the courts against Lincoln County.

“The match took five hours,” Head Coach Belle Guin reported. “We got great play from all our players, especially Lykah, Destiny, and Erin.” McAvoy played for over three hours and after dropping the first set 5-7, she came back to win the next two sets (6-4, 6-4) in a marathon match.

In other results against Lincoln, Mora defeated Abigail Burt 6-4, 6-4; and Favors beat Lore Ann Poss with an 8-6 tiebreaker. Both doubles teams suffered losses.

The W-W girls will now host the first round of the state playoffs and will play the No. 4 seed from Area 2, which has yet to be decided. The Area 2 tournament was played on Tuesday, April 18 but results were not available by press time for this edition.
