The Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School Senior Banquet, at which the valedictorian, salutatorian, honor graduates, and scholarship recipients will be announced and recognized is set to be held Thursday, May 25, at 6 p.m. in the schnool cafeteria.

The Downtown Development Authority of the City of Washington will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the City Hall Annex on Thursday, May 18.

“4-H Masquerade” will be the theme of the annual Wilkes County 4-H Awards Banquet scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School cafeteria.

The City of Washington will host a community picnic from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, June 9, at Reese Booker Park. The event will serve to recognize the hard-working city staff members who installed new equipment for the playground.

W-WCHS graduation ceremonies will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, May 26, at Tiger Stadium.

The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners will meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, at the ­Wilkes County courthouse. A work session in the chairman’s office will be held immediately prior beginning at 1 p.m.

New Saints CME Church will hold Vacation Bible School May 29-June 2 from 6-8 p.m. There are classes for all ages with excellent teachers for children, teenagers, and adult classes. The public is invited to come and study the Word of God.

The Spirited Speakers Toastmasters Club will meet at 6 p. m. at the Lincoln County Library on Thursday, May 18. Anyone at least 18 years of age with a desire to improve communication and leadership skills is invited to attend.

There will be a called meeting of the Wilkes County Planning Commission on Tuesday, May 23, at 5:15 p.m. in the Superior Courtroom in the Wilkes County courthouse. The purpose of this meeting will be discussion, mainly by Commission members, and voting on any recommendations to the Board of Commissioners to modify the Comprehensive Land Use Ordinance as it applies to confined animal feeding operations.

A special retirement event for Horace Jordan will be held Thursday, May 25, at 4 p.m. at the Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation Department. Jordan will be officially retired on June 1, 2017, even though he will run the 2017 Summer Camp.

Summer Camp for all ages will be held at the Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation Department, 22 Lexington Avenue in Washington, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, June 5-8 and 12-15. There is a $20 per week fee. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The W-W Tigers will host the Putnam County Eagles for a spring football game at Tiger Stadium on Friday, May 19, at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 plus a canned good.

The BreasTest and More Program at the Wilkes County Health Department has help to assist in paying for mammograms for the uninsured when funding is available. Clients must be 40-64 years of age, have no health insurance, and meet certain financial requirements.
