County Commissioners conduct short meeting for reports and business

The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners handed a few routine matters during another short regular meeting in which they heard some reports and made one appointment.

Chairman Sam Moore brought to the board’s attention that Marshall Sherrer, a former commissioner, is retiring from his position on the Wilkes County Board of Health after having served that organization for many years. Sherrer also served on a number of other boards from time to time and Moore expressed his thanks on behalf of the county for Sherrer’s service.

On a motion by Commissioner Charles Jackson and a second by Commissioner Esper Lee, Brent Sherrer was appointed to fill the unexpired term which ends December 31, 2018.

Wilkes County EMS Director Blake Thompson reported that his department had a busy month and that races at Aonia Pass for the next two weekends would likely keep the pace up.

County Clerk Karen Burton reported that Local Option Sales Tax funds for the month of March 2017 had been received in the amount of $60,573.75 and the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds were $93,190.37, and TSPLOST was $85,564.36 for the same month.

Commissioners Ed Geddings, Lee, Jackson, and Moore were in attendance last Thursday, May 11, as were County Attorney Charles LeGette, Burton, and few others.

Annie “Pie” Wilkinson rose to say that she wanted the chairman and commissioners to know what a good job they are doing. In turn, the board thanked her for her support and kind words.

Moore announced that the county’s Budget Review Hearing will be held in the commissioners board room of the Wilkes County courthouse at 2:20 p.m. on June 8; The Budget Adoption Hearing will be held June 21 at 1 p.m.; and that Planning Commission meeting were set for May 16 and May 23 both at 5:15 p.m. in the third floor courtroom of the courthouse.

The next regular meeting of the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners will be held at 2 p.m. on June 8 in the courthouse with a work session immediately prior in the chairman’s office beginning at 1 p.m.
