We must understand Christ’s priesthood

(Hebrews 8: 1-7)

In the Old Testament God gave to Moses an office of the Priesthood as they left Egypt to go to the Promised Land that God was going to give to the Israelites as their home. Moses would be their leader and Aaron, Moses’ brother, was anointed to be their High Priest to lead them in their worship of Jehovah God by giving lamb sacrifices in the Tabernacle for the forgiveness of their sins. This was done all the way through the Old Testament days until the New Testament days, when God sent His Son Jesus into the world and Jesus went to the Cross and died for mankind’s sins.

The Old Testament way of worship came to an end when the Temple of God was torn down. God put an end to lamb sacrifices because God gave His lamb sacrifice when Jesus died on the Cross for all of mankind’s sins. There is no need for any more physical lambs to be offered for mankind’s sins.

Hebrews 8:1-2 says, “The sum is we have such an high priest, who is on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched and not man.” The Old Testament priesthood of mankind has come to an end with God’s gift of Jesus Christ, His Son, when He died on the Cross as sacrifice for mankind’s sins. Jesus resurrected from the dead to become not only our lamb sacrifice, but also our Priest, to make the way clear for us to go to Heaven when we die physically believing in Jesus Christ as our Saviour from our sins.

In Hebrews 8:3-7, God reveals to us that every high priest offers gifts and sacrifices that mankind must offer here on earth. But if Jesus was still here on Earth, he could not be a priest, for earthly priests offer gifts according to the law. The earthly priests are only shadows of God’s real High Priest in Heaven who is His Son, Jesus Christ. Moses made the earthly tabernacle according to a pattern given to him by God at Mount Sinai of the Old Testament. But God has given to us a more excellent ministry with a mediator of a better covenant with a better promise of eternal life with Jesus in Heaven.

“If that first covenant had been faultless then should no place have been sought for the second.” (verse 7) But this was not true, therefore God had to give to us His only begotten Son, Jesus, to be our Priest and Lamb Sacrifice for our sins through belief in Jesus as our Saviour.
