Opportunities for jobs and education coming up this month in Washington

Director of Economic Development Tiffany Rainey has identified a number of “great opportunities coming up in Washington-Wilkes” that she has offered for sharing with “groups, friends, family ... everyone.”

Coming up in July and beyond are the following:

Athens-Technical College CNA course – Washington campus – July registration still open – 706-678- 4875.

The local Athens Tech campus just graduated another class of Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and is considering a new class starting in the next two weeks. They would like to fill the class and are looking for a few more students who can start the program immediately. GED required. Georgia Academy of Economic Development registration closing soon – Classes August 29, September 27, October 24, and November 28.

It’s time for Region 7’s Georgia Academy for Economic Development. Wilkes RYDC – Juvenile corrections officers – Wednesday, July 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at The Pope Center, 48B Lexington Avenue in Washing- ton.

The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice and the Department of Labor will be holding a job fair at The Pope Center to recruit Juvenile Corrections officers. A number of materials are required for consideration. If you need to take the Accuplacer test, it is administered weekly at Athens Tech campuses in Greensboro (706-552-0924) and Elberton (706-213-2103) and at the Augusta Tech campus in Thomson (706-595-0166). Call ahead to get the current testing schedule and to reserve your spot.

Wilkes RYDC – All positions – Hiring now underway – team. georgia.gov

New positions are now open at the Wilkes Regional Youth Detention Center. Apply online at team. georgia.gov for administrative, educational, medical, food service, and other open positions. When you visit team.georgia.gov, choose the My Career tab across the top. Then choose Job Openings from the drop-down tab. Enter Washington, Wilkes, Georgia in locations and check out the 25+ open positions. All levels of education welcome. The facility is slated to open on December 2, 2017, so interviewing and hiring is already underway.

Several textile manufacturers have expressed the need for more experienced sewing machine operators and machine mechanics here in Washington-Wilkes and throughout the region. There have also been preliminary discussions of finding an instructor to teach the next generation of sewers as textile manufacturing moves back into the region and state. Nettles-Dillard Scholarship – Deadline July 31 – Applications at Chamber of Commerce (23B W. Square, Washington)

The Washington Woman’s Club annually administers the Nettles Dillard Scholarship for Wilkes County residents returning to continue their education after an interruption due to illness, need to work, family matters, etc. The $1,000 scholarship ($500 per semester) is available to individuals who have been accepted to an accredited college or technical school for the 2017-2018 term. Applications are available at the Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce.
