Rev. Roy Cates honored at 80th birthday celebration

Rev. Roy Cates Rev. Roy Cates Rev. Roy Cates was honored on Saturday, July 8, with a party celebrating his 80th birthday.

The party, hosted by his children, Lynn Harrison of Tignall, Dean Cates of Cumming, and family, was held at Fishing Creek Baptist Church where he has served as pastor for 37 years. Church members also helped with the celebration.

Tables were decorated with budvases of spring flowers and pictures of Rev. Cates from his childhood until the present time.

His birthday cake was decorated to represent his life - first, riding his horse to school, then the Army, his job as a policeman, his marriage, farming, office work, and finally, being a pastor.

Everyone enjoyed a barbecue chicken meal prepared by family and church members.

Approximately 100 guests attended including his family, friends, church members, and a special surprise guest, his 90-year-old aunt, Katherine Wilson, who resides at Baptist Manor in Palmetto.
