Summer ends tomorrow for over 1,600 Wilkes County public school students as they head back to classrooms for the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. Teachers, administrators, and staff members have already been at work for more than a week getting ready for their arrival and Superintendent Dr. Rosemary Caddell reports that “We are looking forward to another year of learning and growing together.”

To prepare students for the new school year, all of the schools are holding open house events this week for parents and students, giving them opportunities to meet their new teachers and see their classrooms.

The primary school’s visitation is today, August 3, from 2-4 p.m., during which students and parents are invited to visit their classrooms and to take students’ supplies for the year if possible. A more extensive open house will be held in conjunction with the first PTG meeting Tuesday, August 8, at 6 p.m. The elementary school’s open house is also today from 1-3 p.m. for pre-K, fourth- and fifth-graders. Also scheduled for W-WES is a Back-to-School Family Fun Night on Thursday, August 10, from 6-7:30 p.m. in the gym. A more in-depth open house/parent orientation will be held for pre-K, fourth, and fifth grades on Tuesday, August 15, at 6 p.m.

The middle school welcomes its parents and students to open house also today from 2-4 p.m.

Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School held open house for rising ninth-graders on Wednesday, August 2 during which the new high schoolers were introduced to faculty members and given information about the daily schedule, courses of study, graduation requirements, extra-curricular opportunities, and student expectations. Upcoming 10th-, 11th-, and 12th-graders and their parents will be visiting for open house today from 2-4 p.m. during which they will be able to pick up their first semester schedules, rent lockers, and purchase parking permits.

The sixth annual public safety walk-through this week saw law enforcement, fire, and emergency personnel tour each school to help them become more familiar with how they would respond in a school emergency.

“Be on the lookout for school buses beginning Friday, and please remember that it is unlawful to pass in either direction when a school bus is stopped with flashers on,” Caddell said.

In light of the newly updated bus routes and stops, the superintendent encouraged parents to view the updated information on the system’s website at www.wilkes.k12.ga.us. On the website, parents can check the website for their child’s bus, and access other pertinent information.

For further information, parents should call the bus shop at 706-678- 2192.

Caddell ended with the well-wish of “we want everyone to have a safe and successful year.”
