Thompson will be subject of ridicule at annual ‘roast’

A gathering of cohorts, friends, classmates, and other acquaintances have been given free reign to take shots at Wilkes County EMA Director Blake Thompson in the T.J. and Friends Foundation annual roast next month.

“I’ve told them not to hold back,” Thompson said. “We’re telling everyone to come out and enjoy it.”

Thompson has been in business 44 years, having gotten started in Elbert County. He is also a board member of the T.J. and Friends Foundation.

Anticipating some of the comments and stories that might be told, Thompson said, “People are going to wonder, ‘did that guy really do that in high school?’ ... Well, I probably did!”

The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, August 12, at The Pope Center and the $25 tickets are already on sale. A barbecue dinner will be served, catered by Wings ’n’ Things, and there will be entertainment, in addition to the roast, by Courtney Terwilliger, Dewy Seymour, Randall Graham, Danny Bessinger, Joe Colvard, and Cheryl Mahoney.

All funds raised will go to support the T.J. and Friends Foundation which in turn uses 100 percent of its money to provide assistance to cancer victims in Wilkes, Elbert, Hart, Franklin, Madison, Oglethorpe, and Lincoln Counties.

Since its beginning in 2008, T.J. and Friends has served some 1,520 residents in those seven counties with $760,000 in assistance “thanks to the kind donations of individuals, businesses, and fundraisers.
