The Downtown Development Authority of the City of Washington will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the City Hall Annex on Thursday, August 17.

Next Friday, August 18, will mark the first Downtown Movie Night for the city of Washington. Everyone is invited to The Square at 8 p.m. for a free showing of Disney's Moana.

Victory Baptist Church is planning a Bible Institute to begin Monday, August 14, at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in attending may call the church at 706-678- 1855. There is no cost and all are welcome. A love offering will be taken at the end of each meeting. The institute is a ministry of the church and will be treated as such.

The Washington City Council will meet on Monday, August 14, at The Pope Center beginning at 6 p.m. A work session will precede the meeting at 5:30 p.m.

The Wilkes County Board of Education will meet at the board office on N. Alexander Avenue on Monday, August 21, at 2 p.m.

Twin Oak Baptist Church homecoming will be held Sunday, August 27, at 11:30 a.m. Dinner will be served.

Reeves Chapel Baptist Church will conduct its annual Revival Meeting services August 21-23. The community is invited to attend.

A Homecoming Celebration for Black Rock African Methodist Episcopal Church in Tignall will be held Sunday, August 13, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Reginald Hunter, pastor of New Springhill Baptist Church, and his choirs and congregation as special guests.

Revival services will be held nightly at Black Rock AME Church beginning at 7 p.m. August 15-17. Preachers for the services are Rev. Johnnie Hunter, pastor of the Norwood Circuit AMEC, on Tuesday; Rev. Terrie Patterson, pastor of New Liberty Hill AMEC in Thomson, on Wednesday; and Rev. Jimmy Roberts, pastor of New Saint Mark AME Church of Athens, on Thursday.

New Life Baptist Church will host the southern gospel group The Perrys, who will be performing live on August 13 beginning at 6 p.m. New Life will hold the event at the church located at 808 East Robert Toombs Avenue in Washington. The public is invited and there is no admission charge. A love offering will be take for the group for those who wish give to their ministry. For more information, call 706-726-1517.

Lem Clark from Penfield Christian Home will be the speaker. Revival services will be held Monday-Wednesday, August 14- 16 at 7:30 p.m. Speakers include Preston Sanders on Monday, Rev. Albert Huyck on Tuesday, and Mark Ward on Wednesday.

The Lincoln-Wilkes Retired Educators Association planning meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 10, at 11 a.m., at the Welcome E. Mason Campus of Excellence in Lincolnton.

The descendants and connected families of Daniel Lumpkin Walker and Margaret Elizabeth Stephenson Walker will meet for their annual reunion Sunday, August 20, at Fishing Creek Baptist Church. A covered dish lunch will be served at 1 p.m. Old family photographs, documents, and genealogy information will be on display. All descendants of Lumpkin’s parents, Tarlton W. Walker and Sarah Headen Walker are also invited to attend.

The Community Outreach Ministry of the Washington Seventh DayAdventist Church is sponsoring a children’s health fair on Sunday, August 20, from 1-5 p.m., at The Pope Center, featuring back to school giveaways, health lifestyle activities, and door prizes. Targeting grades K-8 and teaching wellness, there will be emphasis on drinking water, exercising, better nutrition, sleep/ rest, proper sunlight, and fresh air. There will be a parents class scheduled called “Raising Our Kids to be Winners,” and blood pressure screening.

Phillips Mill Baptist Church’s 232nd homecoming and revival is planned for Sunday, August 13, with a meal following and revival services beginning that evening at 6 p.m. with guest speaker Jamie Callaway, music leader Paul Jackson, and pianist Lamar Nix. The BreasTest and More Program at the Wilkes County Health Department has help to assist in paying for mammograms for the uninsured when funding is available. Clients must be 40-64 years of age, have no health insurance, and meet certain financial requirements. Call the Wilkes County Health Department at 706-678- 2622 for more information and to schedule an appointment.
