64th annual Newsome reunion held August 12 at Ebenezer

The 64th annual reunion of the descendants of Joseph Thomas Newsome (1831 – 1897) and Susan Reynolds Newsome (1835 – 1915) was held on Saturday, August 12, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in the Aonia community.

The Newsomes, natives of Warren County, moved to southeast Wilkes County before the Civil War and raised their family of 15 children in the community surrounding Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Thomas Newsome, a Confederate veteran, was the son of Crawford and Elizabeth Newsome. Crawford was a descendant of William Newsome of Yorkshire, England, who came to Jamestown, Virginia, in 1635.

Today, many Newsome descendants still reside in Wilkes County as well as neighboring counties while many others have moved to different areas all around the country

Eighty-four descendants and family connections were in attendance. Family members present represented Andrew “Jack” Newsome, Robert “Bob” Newsome, William “Willie” Crawford Newsome, Amanda Newsome Smith, and Adam Boyce Newsome families.

Everyone enjoyed an old-fashioned covered dish dinner.

Guests were treated to a video of old and current family pictures as they remembered good times as well as the loved ones they have lost over the years.
