Softball Tigers stage comeback to beat Charlton, and advance

The Washington-Wilkes Tiger girls softball team got off to a sour start last Friday in the first round of the state playoffs but bounced back in grand fashion immediately to send Charlton County packing. The Lady Tigers are now facing the Marion County Eagles in Buena Vista, east of Columbus. The best two-of-three winner on Wednesday/ Thursday will advance to the state Class A Elite Eight.

On Friday of last week, the Lady Tigers lost 5-1 in the first game of the doubleheader but came back fighting to win 10-8 in the second game and force a third game on Saturday.

In game two, Kiara Binns was the leading hitter for the Tigers going 3-for-5 at the plate with three stolen bases. Also, Zanila Booker collected three RBIs. Samantha Wheatley pitched all three games for the Lady Tigers collecting two complete game wins.

W-W closed out the series with a 8-4 win on Saturday, advancing to the second round. In game three, Booker led the offense with a 3-RBI triple. Also getting hits in the game were Binns 1-for-4, Maura Jackson 1-for-3, Kelsey Houpt 1-for-4, Jakiyah Allen 2-for-4, Laney Thornton 1-for-4 2b, and Samantha Wheatley 1-for-1 RBI.

The doubleheader in Buena Vista on Wednesday begins at 4 and 6 p.m. Game three, if needed, will be Thursday (today) at noon. The winner of this series will advance to the Elite 8 in Columbus for a double elimination tournament that will decide the state champion. The Lady Tigers are now 21-8 on the season.

Marion County’s Eagles are 18-3 for the season and 13-1 in region play. So far this year they are unbeaten at home.
