Winnifred Rousey Gunter

A memorial service for Winnifred Rousey Gunter, 97, of Fort Valley, Georgia, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 4, at The Church of Christ in Byron, Georgia. A private burial followed at Anderson National Cemetery. She died at her home on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Gunter was born at home in Tignall on January 22, 1920, to Gordon Richard Rousey and Lessie Rebecca Moone Rousey. She was a member of The Church of Christ in Byron. She graduated from North Georgia College, now the University of North Georgia, in 1939 with an elementary school teaching certificate. She was a homemaker, a devoted gardener, and was known for her good cooking, a love also shared by her late husband.

Survivors include her daughter, Julie Gibb (Gerry); grandchildren Rebekah Duncan (Phillip), and Anna Gibb, all of Fort Valley, Joshua Gibb (Carina) of Searcy, Arkansas, and Jacob Gibb (Emilee) of Casper, Wyoming; great-grandchildren Micah Duncan and Nathan Duncan of Fort Valley, and Allison Gibb of Casper, Wyoming; also, brother-in-law, Calvin “Boots” Gunter of Washington, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gunter is preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Lewis Gunter, her brothers, Ralph Rousey and Clyatt Rousey, and sister, Fern Rousey Baugh.

Rooks Funeral Home in Byron was in charge of arrangements.
