Dooley to discuss new book at CWRT meeting next Tue.

The legendary University of Georgia Bulldog football Coach Vince Dooley will present “The Legion’s Fighting Bulldog” to the Washington Civil War Round Table on Tuesday evening, November 28, at 6 p.m. in the Fitzpatrick Hotel.

The Le- gion’s Fighting Bulldog is the title of Dooley’s latest book. It delves into the Civil War correspondence of University of Georgia graduate and Athens native William Gaston Delony, Lieutenant Colonel of Calvary, Cobb’s Georgia Legion and his wife, Rosa Delony. It is a view into the struggles of life on the battlefield and at home.

Greatly loved by those who served under him, Lt. Col. Delony possessed three admirable attributes: “commanding presence, bull dog courage, and superb generalship.” Delony doesn’t just write about his units’ movements or the battles in which he participated – although he does a very good job of this – he also writes about military and domestic activities taking place, as well as some of his innermost feelings.

Delony expresses concern for his wife’s problems with her pregnancy, as well as his own several wounds, although attempting to play down the latter. It can be said that due to Delony’s tremendous tenacity and fighting ability, that he can be called the “First Georgia Bulldog.”

“Coach Dooley’s presentation will be absolutely facinating, highlighting the real human factor of the Civil War. This meeting is open to everyone, so invite your friends,” Round Table President Claibourne Darden urged.

Dooley will have copies of his new book, as well as some older ones, for those who would like to purchase a personalized copy.

Membership in the Washington Civil War Round Table is open to everyone interested in the War Between the States and new members can join at the meeting. The cost of the meeting is $15 per person and includes dinner. Make reservations, as soon as possible, by email at cdarden43@gmail.com or by calling 404-210- 5811 and leaving a message.
