First step on God’s chosen path

(Luke 1-25)

God’s Chosen Path of Grace is a spiritual path for mankind to walk by faith in God our creator as we live our life on earth. Who was the first human being that God asked to walk on His Chosen Path of Grace? It was Zechariah, a priest. This is found in the first chapter of Luke, where it says: “There was…a certain priest named Zechariah…and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.” (Luke 1:5) “And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.” (verse 6)

They had no children, and they were well-stricken in age. God’s call to Zechariah came while he was carrying out his priestly duties in the temple spreading incense on the altar.

According to his priestly office, his lot was to burn incense in the temple of the Lord. A great multitude of people were waiting for Zechariah to complete this sacred act.

It so happened on this day that God’s angel was standing on the right side of the altar. Zechariah was troubled when he saw God’s angel at the altar.

God’s angel told Zechariah not to be afraid, “for thy prayer has been heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name, John.” (verse 13)

God told Zechariah that he and Elizabeth shall have joy and gladness at his birth. Then God’s angel told Zechariah that John would not consume strong drink, and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost and will have the power of the prophet Elijah.

John will turn the hearts of the people to the wisdom of the just to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. (verse 17)

At this point, Zechariah asked God’s angel, “Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man and my wife well-stricken in years.” (verse 18) The angel said, “I am Gabriel that stands in the presence of God. I have been sent by God to show thee these glad tidings.” (verse 19) Then God’s angel told Zechariah that he would be struck dumb, and not able to speak these glad tidings because of unbelief. The people waited for Zechariah to come out, and when he did he could not speak. (verses 22, 23)

“And it came to pass that as soon as the days of his ministration was accomplished, he departed to his own home…and his wife conceived.” (verse 24) Elizabeth said, “The Lord hath taken away my reproach among men.” (verse 25)

This was God’s first step for mankind to walk on God’s chosen path of grace that will bring salvation to mankind’s soul through faith in God. God extends his welcome through Zechariah and Elizabeth for us to come by faith in God and take our step on His chosen path of grace. When we do this, God’s Holy Spirit will come into our lives and give to us salvation for our soul with God.
