Girls enter as top seed as tennis teams get set to begin area tourney

ALYSSA HOLLEY returns a volley. ALYSSA HOLLEY returns a volley. This Friday, April 13, the Washington-Wilkes Tiger tennis teams will begin post-season play in the Area Tournament at Lincoln County High School. The girls are a sure thing to play in the tournament because they have already secured first place in their half of the area.

However, the boys, tied with GMC for second place in the area, were in a playoff with the Bulldogs on Tuesday and results were not available before press time for this edition. The winner of that playoff will advance to the area tournament. The loser’s season will end.

Area tournament play in Lincolnton will begin at 10 a.m. and will continue all day. All matches will be the best two out of three sets and the No. 1 seed from one half of the area will play against the No. 2 seed from the other half, and vice versa, for both girls and boys teams. In the next round, the winners of those matches will play for first and second place in the area, while the losers will play for third and fourth. All four teams will move on to the first round of the state tennis tournament. The No. 1 and No. 2 finishers will play at home and must complete the first round by April 26.

In earlier action, the W-W teams both lost to a strong Hart County on March 27 (girls 1-4, boys 0-5). Alyssa Holley was the only victor, winning 6-4 , 6-2.

The teams also lost hard-fought matches to Commerce the next day (girls 2-3, boys 1-4). Winners included Ethan Hunt (8-5), Lykah Mora (8-1), and first doubles Laney Thornton and Alaina Callaway (9-8) in a tie breaker.

Wednesday, March 28, was also the teams’ senior recognition. Players and their parents were recognized after the match while W-WCHS Principal Robert Wheeler read a short bio for each player. Seniors received gifts from the coaches and Jennifer and Eric Holton cooked hamburgers, hotdogs, and all the fixings for the players and parents. Leslie McAvoy brought “tennis cookies” for dessert. The tent was decorated with pictures of each senior provided by Mercer Harris Photography and other special touches by Mrs. Holton.
