For the past two weeks, 31 kids have been learning the ins and outs of theater production during the Washington Little Theater’s annual Youth Drama Camp.

“We had 14 juniors (grades 3-6) and 17 seniors (grades 7-12) attend this year, including 11 first-timers,” said Jason LeBlanc, who directed the Camp along with Yareli Lopez.

“We have been blown away at the talent this year from both groups,” said LeBlanc. “It’s really encouraging to see the growth in students over the years. We have some students who four years ago were afraid they would forget a few lines or were too shy to go on stage and are now taking on big lead roles!”

Senior WLT campers are (front row, l-r) Tiffany Marr, Elise Hearn, Lilian Henderson, Zoe Bright, Isabella Sanders, (middle row) McCamy Garrard, Jason Walton, Trix Sunga, Lilly Atkins, Allie Hearn, (back) Jessica Bridges, Azyia Turman, Taylor Madden, Dakota Murphy, Lydia Turner, Lydia Norman, and (not pictured) Dalton Murphy. The final act occurs this weekend with the presentation of two one-act plays: We Open Tomorrow Night?!, performed by the senior campers, and Be Careful What You Wish For, performed by the junior campers. In addition, several students have worked on their own talent act/skit pieces to be performed during the senior’s play.

“We are so grateful to the 12 volunteer helpers who joined us this year to do all the many things around the theater that make Camp an unforgettable experience for the kids,” said LeBlanc. In addition, eight senior students with previous camp experience served as drama coaches for the junior group, helping them audition for their roles and rehearse their lines. “This involvement by the older kids makes such an impact on the younger campers,” said LeBlanc, “and it gives the seniors a chance to lead as they share the knowledge and skills they’ve learned in previous camps.”
