The Lincoln-Wilkes Retired Educators Association (LWREA) received the Georgia Retired Educators Association’s (GREA) highest award, A Unit of Distinction, at the 60th annual convention of GREA held at the Macon Marriott City Center in Macon. Approximately 575 educators from 18 service areas in Georgia attended.

In addition to receiving the Unit of Distinction award, LWREA also received recognition for activities in archives and history, community service, GREA Foundation, Georgia Educators Museum, handbook, history, membership growth, newsletter, public relations, scholarship, scrapbook, spotlight ads, and unit of excellence.

During the first general session, GREA President Myrtice Champion Johnson greeted attendees and various committee reports were given. President Johnson surpassed her presidential goal of getting at least 2,000 new GREA members with a total of 2,500 new members during her 2017-2018 term. GREA presently has over 28,500 members.

The convention offered banquets, entertainment, and a heart-felt memorial service. Throughout the convention, attendees were also able to participate in various seminars and workshops, purchase items at a silent auction and numerous vendors, and tour historic Macon.

The second general session ended the convention, highlighted by the passing of the gavel from Johnson to the new GREA president, Mickey Wendel, who will serve for the 2018-2019 meeting year. The 61st GREA annual convention will be held at the Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center in Augusta.
