Undaunted by threatening weather

While some observed that the crowd on The Square was somewhat smaller than in years past, that may not have been the case as cars up and down Robert Toombs Avenue and also a block south on Liberty Street were packed with onlookers for last week’s Freedom Fireworks Extravaganza. Heavy rains and severe thunderstorms earlier in the evening didn’t appreciably diminish the crowd from coming out to “one of the top 10” small town Independence Day celebrations in the country. The rain cleared just in time but the clouds and lightning remained in the distance north of the courthouse, adding to the pyrotechnic effects. Photographer Mercer Harris captured the spectacular event in this and several other dramatic shots.
