Thomas Combs Young Jr.

Funeral services for Thomas “Tommy” Combs Young Jr., 83, of Washington were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Interment was held at Washington Wilkes Memorial Gardens. He died Sunday, July 1, 2018, at his home.

Mr. Young, son of Thomas Combs and Mamie Irene Young, was born in Washington on August 22, 1934. He graduated from Washington-Wilkes High School and attended Southern Missionary College in Collegedale, Tennessee. He married Carmen Linares on March 1, 1981. They were married for 37 years.

He worked as supervisor at Almar Manufacturing Co. and as a plant manager at Hollander Home Fashions. Later he established his own business, Young’s Electric. He often donated his services to local churches and he was a faithful blood donor for Shepeard Community Blood Center.

Mr. Young served as Chairman of the Wilkes County Republican Committee and recruited leaders and organized Republican Party committees in Lincoln, Warren, Taliaferro, and Greene Counties.

He was appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue as a member of the State Construction Industry Licensing Board from 2004-2008.

He attended the Athens, Georgia, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Augusta First Seventh Day Adventist Church where he was ordained as an Elder, and the Augusta Hispanic Seventh Day Adventist Church.

His hobbies included bee keeping and genealogy. His ancestors included William Few, one of Georgia’s founding fathers and a signer of the U.S. Constitution. He was the Commander of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, Irvin-Toombs Camp No 511, Washington, Georgia.

Survivors include his wife, Carmen Linares Young; his children, James Edward Young (Dorenda), Richard Dean Young (Mary), Jeffrey A. Young (Audrea), Barry Phillip Young (Renee), and Robert Earl Young (Dione); sisters Margaret Gunter and Betty Drinkard (Marty); 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and spiritually adopted children, Amy Dryman; Molly, John, Manoj, and Sanjay Rema; Javier, Gaby, Melisa, and Javier Gonzalez Jr.

Mr. Young was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Combs Young and Mamie Irene Young; and his siblings, Mary Ann Young, Jean Bufford, Frances Callaway, Leslie Young, Charles Young, and Johnny Young.

Pallbearers were Victor Linares, John Rema, Jordan Smith, Addison Young, Braxton Young, and Jason Young.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Wright and Jones Funeral Home in Lincolnton was in charge of arrangements.
