Soap Creek bridge finally open to traffic

Last week, the Georgia Department of Transportation in collaboration with Gregory Bridge Company opened the new US 378 bridge over Soap Creek to traffic, meaning the long off-site detour in Lincoln County is no more.

There will still be some temporary closures in the coming weeks to finish key project tasks but the $8.8 million project is open to traffic, according to GDOT Communications Specialist Kyle Collins.

The Soap Creek bridge on US 378/State Route 43 located four miles east of Lincolnton, was built in 1951, and needed replacement due to structural issues. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also requested that the new structure be raised an additional eight feet above the old bridge, allowing for safe boat passage at full pool.

The structure spans 270 feet and is 40 feet wide, following the same alignment.
