Plenty of baseball talent came from here

Bill Slaton told Washington Rotary Club members about Wilkes County’s Milton Callaway, who could throw a 110-mph fastball on the baseball diamond. Slaton played baseball 11 months out of the year for Florida Junior College some years ago and claimed to be able to hit one of those fastballs and said that you had to start your swing almost before the pitcher let go of the ball in order to hit it. He also mentioned the outstanding baseball abilites and professional careers of other Wilkes Countians like Amos Martin and Tom Nash. Rotary Sergeant-at-arms Michael Horgan listened intently to the stories.
