Mary McAvoy Howard Hawes

Funeral services for Mary McAvoy Howard Hawes, 93, of Bartram Trace Road in Rayle were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2018, at the Phillips Mill Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Woods officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. She died Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at Kindred Hospice Athens.

Mrs. Hawes was born in Rayle and had lived in Wilkes County all of her life. She was the daughter of the late Pope and Susie Sherrer McAvoy. She was twice married and widowed, first by P.M. Howard and then by Marvin Hawes. She had been a homemaker much of her life and a clerk at Peavy’s Drug Store for several years. She was a member of the Phillips Mill Baptist Church, where she was its oldest living member.

Survivors include one son, John Edward (Dawn) of Athens; one daughter, Deana H. Sherrer (Brent) of Rayle; one brother, Henry Pope McAvoy of Rayle; four grandchildren, Ivy Land, Sherrer Thornton, Brandon Howard, and Adam Howard; and four great-grandchildren, Summer Land, Landon Howard, Peyton Howard, and Jaxson Howard.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Howard.
