Lady Tigers split a half-dozen; senior recognition set tonight

During the past week, the Washington Wilkes Lady Tiger softball team split six games evenly to go 3-3 on the week and take their overall season record to 11-8 and 4-2 in the region. The Tigers collected wins against Greene County, Thomson, and Cross Creek High school.

Kara Gammon and Maura Jackson combined for a one-hit 15-0 defeat of Greene County. And on Wednesday, September 5, the Lady Tigers beat Thomson 10-3. Samantha Wheatley pitched a complete game striking out 13 batters.

The ladies were upset by Lincoln County on Thursday 4-6 when they committed six errors leading to five unearned runs for the Red Devils. Maura Jackson led the Tiger offense going 3-for-4 at the plate, and Jordyn Welborn was 2-for-4.

Friday the Lady Tigers lost a heartbreaker in extra innings to Greenbrier 4-3. The Tigers took the lead in the top of the eighth at 3-2. Greenbrier answered in the bottom of the eighth to score two runs with a two-RBI walk-off triple.

Saturday morning the Lady Tigers rebounded to beat Cross Creek 10-2 in six innings. Samantha Wheatley picked up the complete game win.

In the final game of the Mark Mosely Cancer Awareness Tournament, the Lady Tigers lost to Thomas County Central to complete the three-game weekend tournament.

This week the Lady Tigers traveled to Putnam on Monday and hosted GMC Tuesday. (Results of those games were not known at press time for this issue.) Thursday (today) the Lady Tigers will host Glascock and the game will also serve as senior recognition with a ceremony prior to the start of the game. The Tigers will be honoring seniors Maura Jackson, Laney Thornton, and Samantha Wheatley.
