Time getting short to enter Christmas Parade of Lights

On Saturday evening, December 8, thousands of people are expected to line the streets of Washington to see the sixth annual Christmas Parade of Lights, when scores of entries, including many floats brightly lighted for the season, will start from Tiger Stadium at 6 p.m. and proceed west through downtown and on to The Pope Center.

Last year’s parade featured dozens of entries and delighted spectators all along the nearly two-mile route as the bands, floats, and other entries passed by the reviewing stand.

“We are going to have a big parade this year,” organizer Blake Thompson said. “We’ve been working on this since last January, and churches and other organizations have been building their floats for some time now. It’s going to be awesome.”

Entries for the parade will continue to be accepted through November 16 at the EMS office and at the W-W Chamber of Commerce.

The entry fee is $10 and checks should be made payable to W-W Annual Christmas Parade of Lights. Checks can be mailed to 105 Marshall Street, Washington, GA 30673.

First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded in three categories: Non-profit; Industry, business, professional; and School and youth groups. Plus, an overall winner will be chosen from those winners to receive a $500 cash prize.

Applications are available at the Wilkes County EMS Office or at the W-W Chamber of Commerce office.

Once applications are turned in, entrants will be mailed specific lineup information and a list of all other planned activities.

“We graciously look foreward to your participation in the annual Christmas Parade of Lights,” Thompson said. For more information, contact him at 706-319-2237.

In case of inclement weather, the parade will be held on Monday, December 10.
