Laney Thornton is the 2018 recipient of the WJBF NewsChannel Six Scholar Athlete Award for Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School. Each school year during the months of August-April, WJBF and its partners choose 32 outstanding senior athletes from across the CSRA to receive the scholar athlete award.

Nominated by Coach Lindsey Guin, Thornton has participated in varsity softball and tennis for the last four years. She helped her softball team advance to two Sweet 16 appearances and helped her tennis team win two area titles and two Elite 8 appearances. Thornton also serves as a diamond girl for the baseball team.

“I believe Laney truly embodies the definition of this award, and that it couldn’t have gone to a more deserving person,” Guin commented.

After high school, Thornton plans to attend college to pursue a career in the medical field as a registered nurse or radiation therapist. She is the daughter of Angie and Mark Thornton.

WJBF’s presentation aired last week, but can still be viewed online at https://www.wjbf.com/sports/ scholar-athlete-award.
